A marine mechanic is responsible for performing maintenance and repair work on watercraft equipment.

Professional marine mechanics are able to service and repair inboard and outboard boat engines, fuel systems, steering systems, electrical systems, manual starters and navigation systems on different types of watercraft.

A Marine mechanic spends a significant amount of time studying a variety of boat engines. They are trained to diagnose mechanical, electrical and electronic faults.






A marine mechanic may work at boat dealerships, marinas, boat manufacturing facilities or be self-employed. Good communication skills are important so that boat owners understand the work that has been undertaken.

The AMIF is the co-ordinating body for the six autonomous state/territory Boating Industry Associations which are responsible for boating matters WA, SA, VIC, NSW, QLD and NT.

AMIF liaises with the Federal Government and overseas agencies to ensue that the marine industry is recognised as a vibrant and important sector of the Australia economy.
