Laura is a 2nd year apprentice at Jamberoo Native Nursery. She is studying Horticulture and specialising in Production Nursery. If you like working with plants and fresh air, Horticulture may be for you. Work is in both metropolitan and regional areas and in areas such as Parks & Gardens Management; Environmental Planning; Landscape Design and Construction; Research; Retail Nursery and Garden Centre Management; Arboriculture; Turf Management and Production Nursery.

There is hardly a living plant grown for the horticultural industry that does not start life in a production nursery. They grow, propagate (meaning to multiply) and supply plants to supermarkets, retail nurseries, garden centres, landscapers, farmers and many others. Work is often outdoors and can be physical. Roles include casual and shift work, so working in this job is suitable for a wide variety of people.

AGRIFOOD SKILLS AUSTRALIA

AgriFood Skills Australia is an independent not-for-profit company with an industry representative Board. It is one of eleven Industry Skills Councils established by the Australian Government to support the development, implementation and continuous improvement of quality training and workforce products and services, including training packages.
AgriFood’s role was given greater focus in 2007-08 with the release of the Australian Government’s Skilling Australia for the future initiative. This introduced a Productivity Places Program that funds for 711,000 new training places over five years.

AgriFood’s is resourced principally by the Australian Government to:
use industry intelligence to advise business and government on workforce development and skill needs
actively support the development and implementation of quality skills training arrangements and related services
provide independent skills and training advice to businesses, including matching identified skills needs with appropriate training solutions
